Population-Based Mental Health: It Works!

Ask curriculum developers J. Scott Hinkle and Donna Henderson, and they will tell you that the Mental Health Facilitator (MHF) program started in much the same way as trained MHFs do today. The program’s developers recognized a need and committed to do something about it.

More than 450 million people worldwide experience some form of mental health concern, and yet many people lack access to professional mental health care. Seeing this care-need gap, NBCC International (NBCC-I) and the World Health Organization (WHO) initially collaborated on an idea to help close it: MHF.

Important Moments in MHF Development

2007: The first MHF training was held in Mexico City.
2008: The first training-of-trainers was held in Lilongwe, Malawi.
2010: Due to program growth, NBCC-I began training interested mental health professionals as MHF master trainers.
2013: Research on MHF program effectiveness began.
2014: The MHF program released new community-focused curricula, the MHF-ASAP! and MHF-Educator’s Edition.
2015: The MHF program released the abbreviated  MHF-Express Educator’s Edition.
